I talked to Apple support this morning and tried what they recommended (checked to make sure itunes and os were up to date, turned computer and itunes off and on, tried different USB slots and different charging Once I start the update and it says 'serial number: n/a' it starts prepinng my phone and updating it, the bar on my phone stops at about halfway (during 'updating firmware' I believe) I then get an error message from iTunes on my laptop saying ' The iPhone could not be updated. Once I would start the process of putting it onto my new phone (such as when it says 'extracting software') it shows the phone's serial number, but when it goes to 'preparing iphone for software update' the serial number changes to 'n/a'.
I then decided to do it through my computer (took multiple tries due to lost connections) but I finally got it. Then when I started switching to the 6s, like other users my phone would freeze up on the white 'slide to upgrade' screen and tried running the update/refresh. I backed it up via iCloud and through my laptop. So I finally got my new 6s last week but after a trip to visit family during the weekend and midterms at my university this week, I finally got to work on switching from my iPhone 5 (running on like iOS 6) to my new 6s.
